Sunny Creek Boutique opens in Tyro community in Davidson County
Shopping for women’s clothing just became something folks in Tyro can do without a trip out of the community.
Western Davidson County resident Laura Barney opened Sunny Creek Boutique on Aug. 1 in West Plaza in the former Watson Candle Company location next to Subway.
“I always wanted to do something like this,” Barney said. “I’m still learning. It helps that my daughter (Riley) works with me. I’m older. She’s younger, so she attracts her crowd and helps me with clothing that younger people want to wear.”
This is not Barney’s first boutique. It’s actually the third location for Sunny Creek.
She opened the boutique in September 2020 in Creekshire Way in Winston-Salem and later moved the store to The Shoppes at Somerset near Hanes Mall Boulevard.
The commute was long and the rents were high, however. So she closed the store in April 2022, with the hope of being able to find a more affordable spot closer to home.
She found it at 4344 S. N.C. Highway 150, two minutes from her home.
“I want to be able to offer my clothing at a certain price point that is affordable,” she said. “I know prices are increasing, but I am trying to price things where nothing is above $50.”
A group of short and maxi dresses in her store were priced Tuesday for about $32. Hair clips are $5. Jewelry was $12. She even sells Sweet Nanny Goat Soap for $6 a bar.
There are also blouses, jeans, bedroom slippers, ball caps, leggings, stainless steel tumblers and more. She packs a lot onto the 600 square-foot sales floor. There are dressing rooms, which her husband built, in the back of the store and a storage area.
“Hopefully it will be what people need for themselves or a gift without having to drive out of town,” she said. “I have a small space.”
The store will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Barney will work at the store from opening until her daughter gets out of school at West Davidson High. Riley Barney will then work there so her mom can do her home-based job with Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health’s call center.
“We love meeting and talking with new customers,” she said. “We love repeat customers, too.”
Ella Cox of Lexington was the store’s first customer. She said she heard about the new store from a friend and wanted to check it out on opening day.
“I always like to support local,” she said.
Sunny Creek has social media pages on Facebook and Instagram where the public can like and follow the store to keep up to date with store inventory.
